My Starbucks Experience: The Truth About Being A Barista

How can you work at Starbucks and not drink coffee? As a barista, I get asked that question a lot. So, to that answer, I will be sharing my Starbucks barista experience in this post. That said, read along as I share my story.

In 2019, I was working at King Of Prussia Mall. At the time, I was working at a store that sold olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Along with that, I was also struggling to pay off my credit card debt. I remember feeling worried because this was my first time having a credit card.

So, to help pay off my debt, I needed to find a second job. Thankfully, because I knew some of the employees in the mall, I was able to get hired at Starbucks, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise.

Since my first job closed down in response to the pandemic- so in all honesty, Starbucks saved me from becoming unemployed.

Before Starbucks, I had never made a latte in my life. Nor a frappuccino, refresher, cold brew, etc. And so, coming into this job, I felt a little nervous. I didn’t know if I would be a good barista or if I would suck at making drinks.

But after about six months of working at Starbucks, I started to get the hang of things. I started remembering the recipes for each drink and how to make them. And so yeah, making drinks was a little nerve-racking for me at first.

I would say what I like most about my job is my coworkers. They always make me laugh when I am having a rough day. Whether it be customers or something at home, I can count on them to make me laugh.

Another thing I like about my job is that they help you with your education – so, say you want to go to college and don’t have the funds to pay for your schooling. With Starbucks, they will pay for it as long as you work an average of 20 hours per week. I mean, how amazing is that?

As far as my dislikes go, it has to be the customers. I find that sometimes they can be rude and impatient. Especially compared to when I worked at Macy’s, these customers are something else. It’s as if people here do not know how to act. But overall, it’s not the worst job I’ve had.

I will say that yes, it can be. Working here will not only teach you patience, but you’ll learn to adapt to different situations because working with the general public is not an easy feat.
